A short clip with sound

Two animation scenes back to back in a composition, with a sound under them, rendered to an MP4. The video needs ffmpeg; Ayatsuri2D installs it for you if it is missing.

1. Two scenes

In the Animation workspace, Animation > New Animation… makes a scene. Make two: Wave, your character waving, and Nod, a nod. Key each one in the Timeline (Animation).

2. A composition

Animation > New Composition… (or the + in the Timeline header) makes a composition. Name it Clip. The picker in the Timeline header lists it after the scenes.

3. Lay the scenes in

  1. The stack button in the header (Add layer) adds a layer. Add Wave, then Nod.
  2. Drag Nod's bar so it starts where Wave ends. Hold Shift while dragging to snap to the other layer's end.
  3. To blend one into the other, slide Nod back a little so the two overlap, then drag the small square at the top left corner of Nod's bar inward: that is its fade in. The ramp draws inside the bar.

The top layer plays over the ones below it. Drag a layer's name up or down the list to change the order.

4. Add the sound

File > Import Audio… (or Audio file… in the Add layer menu) and pick a WAV, MP3, FLAC or Ogg. It lands at the playhead as a sound layer with its waveform in the bar. Fade it in and out with the corner squares, as with a scene.

The sound file is kept by path, relative to the .aom: keep the two together when you move the project.

5. Mix it

Open Window > Audio Mixer (a tab beside the Timeline). The sound has a strip with a fader (double-click for 0 dB), level meters and a pan knob. Press Space to play the composition and set the level while it plays.

6. Render the MP4

  1. File > Export Animation… opens the Render window.
  2. Pick MP4 (H.264) on the left. If it is greyed out, click Install ffmpeg under the formats and wait for it to finish.
  3. Set Scene to Clip; compositions are listed after the scenes.
  4. Choose the Frame rate, Width and Folder, then Add to queue.

The job runs in the Queue under the player, with the time left. Its sound layers are mixed into the video. When it is done, Open the folder.
