Your first expression

A smile your character can switch on in VTube Studio: made from a pose in the Expression palette and exported with the model.

1. Pose the smile

Use the parameters your model already has. With the standard parameter set:

  • ParamMouthForm towards 1 for a smiling mouth;
  • ParamBrowLY and ParamBrowRY up a little.

Move only what the smile needs. Everything you leave at its default stays out of the expression.

2. Make the expression from the pose

  1. Open Window > Expression (in the Animation workspace it is a tab beside the Timeline).
  2. Press + (New empty expression) and type Smile into Name.
  3. Press Set from pose. Every parameter you moved off its default becomes a row, as an Add of the difference.

Now put the parameters back to their defaults. Turn on the eye (Preview: lay the expression over the pose): the smile lays over whatever pose the model is in.

3. Adjust it

Each row has a Value to drag, a Blend and Remove.

  • Add adds the value to the pose. Good for brows and mouth shapes that should work with any head angle.
  • Multiply scales the pose: 0 on an eye open parameter shuts that eye whatever it was.
  • Overwrite sets the parameter outright.

Add parameter… brings in a parameter you didn't pose: filter the list, set the value, pick the blend and Add.

4. Fades

Tick Fade in and Fade out to set how long the smile takes to come and go, for example 0.3 seconds in. Unticked, the time is left to the player, which uses one second.

5. Export with the model

File > Export Model… on the moc3 tab, with moc3 version 5.0 and exp3.json for each expression ticked. The smile goes out as expressions/Smile.exp3.json, listed in the model3.json.

In VTube Studio, the expression is there for its expression hotkeys: set one to toggle Smile. See VTube Studio and Expressions.
