A head turn with a warp
The classic first rig: the whole head turns left and right with Angle X.
1. Put the head under a warp
- Select every mesh of the head: Ctrl+click them in the Part palette, or select the head part's meshes with the Lasso (L).
- Modeling > Deformer > Create Warp Deformer. Name it
Head. A 5×5 grid with 2×2 Bezier divisions is a good start.
The head now hangs under the warp in the Deformer palette.
2. Add the keys
- On Angle X, add three keys: -30, 0, 30.
- A guide line down the middle of the face helps: right-click the canvas > Guide Line > Add Vertical Line, or hover there and press V.
3. Shape each side
- Drag the Angle X slider to 30 (its right key).
- Select the warp. Turn on Bezier in Tool Details and shape the grid as if the face turned to the right: squeeze the right side, widen the left, slide the middle over. Keep the bottom (the neck) still.
- Drag the slider to -30 and do the mirror. Or use Reflect from the parameter's menu to mirror the right-hand key into the left.
Move the slider: the head turns. Shapes between keys blend by themselves.
If an edit won't land, the parameters are between keys: the Deform Brush banner offers to snap them onto the nearest keys.
4. Up and down
Do the same on Angle Y (look up and down), then Generate four corner forms (Ctrl+4) to fill the diagonal corners from the edges.
