Free VTuber rigging software
Ayatsuri2D is free, open-source software for rigging 2D VTuber models. It turns layered art from Photoshop, Krita or Clip Studio Paint into a model that moves with your face, and exports moc3, the format VTube Studio loads. There are no limits, no subscription and no account.
What you need
- Layered art. A PSD, Krita or Clip Studio file with each moving part on its own layer: eyes, brows, mouth, hair strands, head, body.
- Ayatsuri2D, free for Windows, macOS and Linux.
- A face tracking app that loads moc3, such as VTube Studio.
How rigging works
- Open your art: every layer becomes a mesh, grouped as in your file.
- Mesh the layers so they can bend where they need to.
- Hang them under deformers that bend whole areas: the face, the hair, the body.
- Bind them to parameters (head turn, blink, mouth open) with a shape at each key.
- Add physics so hair and clothes swing on their own.
- Export moc3 for VTube Studio.
The tutorial Your first model from a PSD walks through all of it on a real model.
Other free options
Live2D Cubism Editor has a FREE edition, limited to 100 ArtMeshes, one texture up to 2048 px and 3 ArtPaths, for individuals and businesses under 10 million yen a year, on Windows and macOS. Inochi2D is free and open source too, but it has its own format and streaming app, so its models do not go into VTube Studio. See free Live2D alternatives compared for the full table.
Questions
Is there free software to rig a VTuber model?
Yes. Ayatsuri2D is free and open source, with no limits on meshes, textures or parameters. It exports moc3 for VTube Studio.
Can I rig a VTuber model from a PSD for free?
Yes. Ayatsuri2D opens a layered PSD, turns each layer into a mesh, and exports a moc3 model with its physics and expressions.
Can I sell a model I rigged with free software?
With Ayatsuri2D, yes. The editor's GPL-3.0 covers its own code, not what you make with it.
