VTube Studio

Getting a model from Ayatsuri2D into VTube Studio: which export settings to use, how tracking finds your parameters, and how to update the model later without losing VTube Studio's setup.

Export settings

Open File > Export Model… (Ctrl+Alt+S) on the moc3 tab.

  • Name: the name the exported files take.
  • moc3 version: keep 5.0, the default. VTube Studio reads up to 5.0; a 5.3 model doesn't open there yet, and the dialog says so.
  • Include: tick physics3.json, motion3.json for each animation and exp3.json for each expression.

Press Export… and choose a folder. The export writes the moc3, the model3.json that lists everything, the physics, the display names, the textures and the motions and expressions.

Loading it

VTube Studio loads models from its own Live2DModels folder. Put the exported folder there (or export straight into a folder inside it) and pick the model in VTube Studio's model list.

Tracking

VTube Studio drives a model through its parameter ids. The standard ids (ParamAngleX, ParamEyeLOpen, ParamMouthOpenY and the rest) are the ones trackers expect, so a model that uses them moves as soon as it loads. Start with the standard parameter set in the New Project dialog creates fourteen of them: angles, eyes, eyeballs, brows, mouth, body and breath. A parameter you add yourself takes its id in the ID field of the New Parameter dialog.

Blinking and lip sync

model3.json carries an EyeBlink and a LipSync group. A model that came with groups keeps them. Otherwise the export fills them in: EyeBlink from ParamEyeLOpen and ParamEyeROpen, LipSync from ParamMouthOpenY, when the model has them.

Expressions

Each expression from the Expression palette is exported as an exp3.json and listed in the model3.json, where VTube Studio finds it for its expression hotkeys. Set Fade in and Fade out in the palette if you want a different speed from the player's one second.

Blend modes

The newer blend modes need moc3 5.3. A 5.0 export draws each mesh with the closest of Normal, Add and Multiply and the dialog says how many meshes it touched, so check the model looks right with those three. See Blend modes.

Updating the model

Export into the same folder again. Ayatsuri2D sees the model already there and asks first (Overwrite Export). Overwrite replaces exactly the files that model lists (moc3, textures, physics, motions, expressions); anything else in the folder, like VTube Studio's own settings for the model, stays as it is.

Checking a rig before you export

VTube Studio can drive the model live while it is still open in Ayatsuri2D, through the Ayatsuri API. See Checking a rig with VTube Studio.
