From a PSD to a moc3 model for VTube Studio

Ayatsuri2D turns a layered PSD into a moc3 model that VTube Studio loads, for free, with no limit on meshes, textures or parameters. Each layer becomes a mesh; you add deformers and parameters, and export moc3 with its model3, physics3 and expression files.

The steps

  1. Prepare the PSD: every part that moves on its own layer (eyes, brows, mouth, each hair strand), grouped by area. Krita and Clip Studio Paint files work the same way.
  2. Open it in Ayatsuri2D: layers become meshes and groups become parts. See Importing art.
  3. Mesh the layers that bend with the automatic mesh generator, and refine them in Mesh Edit.
  4. Add deformers for the face, hair and body (Deformers), and parameters for head turn, blink and mouth (Parameters), with VTube Studio's standard parameter IDs so tracking finds them.
  5. Add physics so the hair swings (Physics).
  6. Export with File > Export Model… on the moc3 tab, and load the folder in VTube Studio (VTube Studio).

The tutorial Your first model from a PSD does all of it on a real model.

Why not Cubism FREE?

Cubism Editor's FREE edition makes moc3 too, but it stops at 100 ArtMeshes and one texture up to 2048 px, and a file over the limits cannot be saved. A full VTuber model usually has more layers than that. Ayatsuri2D has no such limits; see the comparison.

Questions

How do I turn a PSD into a moc3 file for free?

Open the PSD in Ayatsuri2D, mesh and rig the layers, then use File > Export Model… on the moc3 tab. It is free with no limits on meshes or textures.

Does the moc3 from Ayatsuri2D work in VTube Studio?

Yes. It exports moc3 with model3, physics3, motion3 and exp3 files, the same bundle Cubism Editor exports, at version 5.0 by default because that is what VTube Studio opens.

How many layers can my PSD have?

As many as you like. Ayatsuri2D has no ArtMesh or texture limit; Cubism FREE stops at 100 ArtMeshes.
